The Challenge
A file server suffered corruption, putting business data and departmental operations at risk. At the same time, the organization was running older Windows Server infrastructure that needed modernization and a clearer approach to file permissions and service continuity.
My Role
I recovered data from the damaged virtual hard disks and helped rebuild file services around the recovered content. I also worked on upgrading the physical server environment and domain controllers to Windows Server 2025.
Approach & Implementation
- Recovered data from corrupted virtual hard disks and validated recovered content for restoration.
- Migrated recovered the organization’s finance data and print/design data to new file-server locations.
- Created department-aware file structures and applied appropriate permissions where previous access had been overly broad.
- Upgraded a physical server environment from Windows Server 2019 to Windows Server 2025.
- Upgraded the primary domain controller and retired the older 2019 domain-controller instance after transition.
- Deployed a domain controller on a second physical server to improve resilience and distribute directory services.
- Built a separate file service for print and design collaboration.
Business Impact
- Recovered important business data from a failed virtual-disk situation.
- Restored shared-file services with clearer departmental access boundaries.
- Modernized core server and directory infrastructure.
- Improved resilience by introducing a second domain controller.
- Created a better foundation for ongoing server management and future backup improvements.
Outcome & Lessons
The work was both recovery and redesign: restore what the business needed, then rebuild the destination with improved structure, access control and a more current server platform.
