Coordinating response under pressure while protecting business access

The Challenge

On the first day of the year, a Microsoft 365 account-compromise incident affected 27 accounts. The incident required urgent investigation and coordinated action to reduce the risk of further unauthorized access while keeping business needs in view.

My Role

I individually managed the incident response, coordinating the account-level work and prioritizing containment and recovery across the affected accounts.

Approach & Implementation

  • Managed the response process across the 27 affected Microsoft 365 accounts.
  • Focused on regaining control of affected identities and reviewing account access as part of the response.
  • Coordinated the recovery work to restore legitimate access and reduce operational disruption.
  • Used the incident as a reminder of the importance of documented identity-security practices and stronger operational controls.

Business Impact

  • Provided a single point of ownership during a time-sensitive security event.
  • Helped coordinate recovery across a multi-account incident rather than treating accounts as isolated tickets.
  • Reinforced the need for clear identity-security policies, multifactor authentication and ongoing monitoring.

Outcome & Lessons

The incident details published here are deliberately high-level. I do not disclose forensic indicators, tenant configuration, exact attack methods or other information that could expose the organization to additional risk.

Scope note: this case study describes my contribution in first-person terms where appropriate. Team members, vendors and business stakeholders also contributed to delivery. Technical details are kept at a safe, professional level.
